I often hear comments that skincare is only for women and that men shouldn't even bother... With the rise of the Afropolitan era, we see men embracing grooming, and it is no longer seen as something that only women should do, grooming and hygiene is essential for everyone, and it's time we dropped the toxic masculinity around men and their grooming habits. In this post I list the basics for skincare for men, a starting point that is easy to maintain.
Basic skincare routine
Cleanse your face twice a day, with a face wash that is not drying to your skin.
Moisturize with a moisturising cream/gel at night and use one that has SPF during the day.
Exfoliate three times a week- especially before shaving
Never apply methylated spirits onto your hair or beard area- this burn the skin and causes pigmentation/darker skin on that area. It also causes infections and irritation.
Use a warm/hot towel on the area you want to shave.
Use a mask, that will remove impurities but restore moisture, three times a week after exfoliating.
How to choose products fro your skin
Think "moisturizer" when buying soaps -- body and hand soaps, that is.
Buy a face moisturizer that contains sunblock or sunscreen.
If you've got dry skin, buy a light moisturizing body lotion for summer.
During winter months, buy heavier moisturizing creams or ointments.
If dry skin is really a problem, go for a cream with anti-ageing benefits or one that has retinol .
Always use a good sunscreen outdoors (SPF 15 or higher).
Take care of your skin gentlemen, grooming is essential- PLEASE.
